Whats New on Disney+ in October 2022

After some 30 films and 16 TV series (depending on how you count them), I am growing numb to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m no snob, and I still think the movies are fun and that the lore is interesting—I just have trouble caring enough to actually keep pace.

I think Disney knows this, which is why they keep trying to push the franchise into newer and weirder territories with the likes of the ultra-meta WandaVision and the rom-com energy of She-Hulk. It was only a matter of time before they tried full-blown horror (Multiverse of Madness and the ill-fated New Mutants notwithstanding). And what better time to do so than the height of Spooky Season?

On Oct. 7, Disney+ will drop Werewolf by Night, which draws from stories featuring an obscure minor character in the comics canon who, Wikipedia and a few comic sites assure me, is indeed just that. Gael Garcia Bernal plays Jack Russell, who has trouble controlling his animal instincts; Laura Donnelly and Harriet Samson Harris are among the cast of character actors playing monster-hunters tracking him down as they vie for control of a magic relic of some sort. Sure, sure, that’s fine, but I’m here for the throwback black & white vintage horror vibes:

Also on tap, franchise fans: Tales of the Jedi (Oct. 26), a compendium of Star Wars animated shorts in the tradition of last year’s anime-influenced Star Wars: Visions. With an art style recalling the Clone Wars TV series, the six mini-films promise to delve into heretofore unexplored corners of the canon, including the rise of Count Dooku, everyone’s favorite octogenarian Sith lord.

Here’s everything else arriving on the streamer in October, including the return of the quirky kids’ series The Mysterious Benedict Society (Oct. 26), based on the popular novels.
